What Is a Work Hours Calculator?

A work hours calculator adds up how much time you actually worked, in hours and minutes, after accounting for breaks, across a single day or a full week at once. It also flags overtime automatically, so you don't have to manually check each day against an 8-hour or 40-hour threshold.

How to Use the Work Hours Calculator

Enter your start time, end time, and break duration for each working day. Click "Add Day" to add more rows for a full week, then click Calculate. The result shows your total hours, regular hours, overtime hours, and the number of days worked, along with your average hours per day.

How Overtime and Overnight Shifts Are Calculated

For each day, the calculator subtracts your break minutes from the raw time between start and end, and any daily total beyond 8 hours (480 minutes) is counted separately as overtime. If your end time is earlier on the clock than your start time, such as a 10 PM to 6 AM shift, it automatically treats the shift as spanning midnight and adds 24 hours before calculating the total, so overnight work comes out correct without any manual adjustment.

Why Track Work Hours Precisely?

Getting worked hours right matters for more than curiosity:

If you only need the duration of a single stretch of time rather than a full week of shifts, the time duration calculator is a faster way to get that number.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is overtime calculated?

Hours beyond 8 per day are counted as daily overtime. The calculator also shows total weekly overtime if weekly hours exceed 40.

Does it handle overnight shifts?

Yes — if your end time is before your start time (e.g. 10 PM to 6 AM), the calculator automatically treats it as an overnight shift.

Can I calculate a full week at once?

Yes — click "Add Day" to add a row for each day you worked, enter the times and break for each, and Calculate returns your total, regular and overtime hours across all of them together.

How are breaks subtracted?

Enter your break length in minutes for each day, and the calculator deducts that time from the raw hours between start and end time before totaling regular and overtime hours.

Does the 8-hour overtime threshold apply to every country?

No — the 8-hours-per-day and 40-hours-per-week thresholds used here reflect common US overtime rules; check local labor law if you need figures for a different country.

Can I remove a day I added by mistake?

Yes — every day added after the first includes a Remove button that deletes just that row without affecting the other days already entered.
